Short answer: if you never found a token, there is no Plunder button at all, and that is normal. Otherwise, most "token not working" problems are one of four things: the shop has not refreshed on your client, you played Ranked, the deadline passed, or Epic's servers are having trouble. Work through the checks below in order.
1. No Plunder button? You may not have a token
The Plunder the Item Shop button only appears on accounts that have a token. Most players never find one, so for most people the Item Shop looks exactly as it always has. Nothing is broken.
The token only counts if it appeared in your post-match rewards or in your Item Shop. A chest glowing gold or a clip from another player does not mean the token is on your account. To try for one, see how to get Pirate Shop Access.
2. You found a token but the button is missing
The token is activated from a Plunder the Item Shop button on the bottom edge of the Item Shop; most guides put it at the bottom right, one at the bottom left, so check both corners. If the token showed up in your post-match rewards and the button is not there:
- Leave the Item Shop and open it again.
- Fully close Fortnite and start it again. On consoles, close the game completely instead of using rest mode.
- Install any pending Fortnite update, then check again.
- On PC, verify the game files in the Epic Games Launcher.
3. Your squadmate found it but you didn't get it
Reports from Vice, Beebom and TheGamer say everyone in the party gets the token when one player finds it. Being in the same match is not the same as being in the same party. If you joined through fill or random squads, you may not count as party members. Check your own Item Shop after the match.
4. You were playing Ranked
Beebom reports the token cannot drop in Ranked lobbies. Play public, non-Ranked Battle Royale.
5. The deadline passed
The 2026 activation has to be used by December 15, 2026, 7 PM ET, which is 00:00 UTC on December 16. The Item Shop shows the deadline in your local time, so in the Americas it falls on the afternoon or evening of December 15. After that, that activation is gone. The second activation for 2027 is separate; see the deadlines.
6. Epic's servers are down
If the Item Shop itself will not load, the problem is not your token. Check Epic Games Public Status for an Item Shop or login incident, and try again once it is resolved.
7. Some items will not unlock
That is expected. Real-money offers, gifts, Battle Pass levels and rewards, and a second Sidekick are not covered. See What you can claim.
Is the Shop Token even real?
Yes. It is a Treasure Hunters reward, and players have posted videos of the Pirate Shop working. It is extremely rare, so most players will never find one; see how rare it is.
How to spot a token scam
Warning signs:
- A site asks for your Epic login, email code or two-factor code.
- A video promises a guaranteed token, a "glitch" or a generator.
- Someone in Discord or in-game messages offers a token for V-Bucks, a gift or your account details.
If you entered your details anywhere suspicious, change your Epic password and turn on two-factor authentication right away.
